Chapter Nine
Pax
Mini and I were making such progress. It got awkward at the end with all my vague answers, but then Anson came and commanded that I shift into wolf form. I can’t resist the orders of my alpha, so, right in front of Mini, I started to shift into my wolf form. I could see the fear in her eyes when she saw me change. She couldn’t take it and ran off screaming. Of course, she did. Seeing someone shift for the first time can be alarming.
I want to follow her, but Anson won’t let me. Protecting the pack is more important. It’s always more important. And maybe he’s right. If Mini can’t handle seeing me like this, maybe she isn’t the one for me. There are so many things keeping us apart. We’re really so different from one another.
I just don’t know.
I put it out of my mind as my wolf side takes over. Running with my pack always brings out the more feral side within me. I don’t have to think about the problems in my life or what’s going wrong. It’s part of the reason why I have stayed. I have loyalty to my family, and nothing rivals running together like this. The wind rushing through my fur, feeling that deep connection to nature and Mother Earth. Our howls cut into the night sky, igniting it with our intentions.
I used to find these moments to be the best ones. I thought nothing, and no one could possibly compare. Or that’s what I thought until Mini. I shake visions of her from my head and focus on the task at hand. We are going into battle, and I need to stay prepared. I can’t let my guard down in case anything happens.
We reach where the rival pack is, and, immediately, we’re all fighting. No attempts at negotiation or peace. They’ve already made their stance clear by intruding on our land in such a bold way. Now is the time for a statement to be made. Bodies are in the air as wolf attacks wolf. This is my first true fight like this. As pups, we would practice one on one in case the day came, and I do my best to keep up, drawing on those skills. The smell of sweat and blood fills the air as howls and screams take over.
It’s hard to tell where this fight is going to end up, but we’re able to start pushing them away from the outskirts of our land. The battle continues to back up until their alpha calls for a full retreat. As their wolves run off, the alpha looks back at Anson.
“The Stayman pack has had their secret for too long, but don’t forget that the Mathis pack knows about your stronghold, and we will do what we must to drive you off of your land. Remember our names.” He howls before joining the rest of his men in their retreat.
It is a victory, but one that isn’t fully sweet.
